These are so much better than store bought cinnamon rolls and you can honestly add anything to these to create your own favorite flavor. The dough is actually fairly simple and as long as you follow the directions, these are really hard to mess up. If you’re anything like me, you may want to double the recipe because these won’t last long. I love the apple and walnuts especially during the fall and cream cheese icing is perfect on everything!
Apple Walnut Cinnamon Rolls
Dough
- 1 ⅓ Cup Milk
- 2 tbsp Butter
- 1 Packet Instant Yeast
- ¼ Cup Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 4 Cups Flour
- 1 tsp Salt
Filling
- ½ tsp Cinnamon
- ½ Cup Butter (softened)
- 1 Cup Apple Butter
- ½ Cup Chopped Walnuts
Icing
- 4 oz Cream Cheese (softened)
- 4 tbsp Butter (softened)
- ½ Cup Powdered Sugar
- ½ tsp Vanilla Extract
-
In a small saucepan, heat milk to 90 degrees. Whisk in butter and pour into a large bowl. Add sugar and yeast. Whisk to combine and set aside for about 5 minutes. Add egg and mix well.
-
In a separate bowl, sift 4 cups of flour.
-
Add 2 cups of your sifted flour to the milk/yeast mixture and using a wooden spoon, stir to combine. Add salt and flour ½ cup at a time until dough comes together and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
-
Pour onto a floured surface and knead, adding more flour as needed, until dough is no longer sticky.
-
Place your dough in a bowl, cover, and allow to rise 45 minutes or until dough has doubled.
-
Punch down the dough and then roll into a rectangle, about 12″ x 15″.
-
Oil your baking dish and set aside.
-
In a small bowl mix the ingredients for your filling and spread evenly across your dough.
-
Roll your dough on the long edge and cut into 1-inch rolls. This should make roughly a dozen rolls.
-
Preheat your oven to 375° F and cover your rolls with a clean dish towel and let rise another 30 minutes. If you can set this on top of your stove while the oven preheats, the heat from your oven will help your rolls rise.
-
Bake for 22- 25 minutes or until golden brown and rolls are cooked through in the center.
-
Using a hand mixer, mix together the ingredients for your icing. Spread on top and enjoy!
